On Hurricanes…

So…lately I feel like I am living in a state of Deja vu…Florida is being bombarded by hurricanes, one right after another that are leaving significant destruction in their wakes. They are not fun to live through as Floridians hunker in place. It can be scary as you listen to the loud bangs of stuff ricocheting off the roof. And of course, hurricanes always seem to make landfall at night.

And so, here we are. Milton is covering most of Florida and there really isn’t anywhere to go unless we travel up into the Midwest. Helene left most of the areas we tend to skedaddle devastated and, in some cases, obliterated. People are hurting, scared, and having to completely rebuild. For those on the west coast of Florida, they were just getting cleaned up (not rebuilt, just cleaned up) and now they are going to have to do it all over again. It is hard.

Today, in Merritt Island, the traffic is heavy as everyone is out getting the supplies we don’t have at home. We will bring in water, fill our bathtubs with water, we will bring in food we can grill or just has pop tops. We will lay in supplies of batteries, get gas for generators, and all the other things we need in case we have no electricity or water. We will make sure our tarps are in good shape or purchase the ones we need as we board up our windows. Unless we have been able to afford hurricane windows but even then, they are no guarantee they won’t be compromised by a tree limb being hurled by the hurricane force winds. We will do what we have to do because that is all we can do.

We will hunker in place and spend a sleepless night because the wind will keep us awake as will the debris flying around. When the hurricane passes through, we will go outside and assess the damage. Hopefully there will only be yard debris and little else. We will clean up and we will move forward. And…we will wait with baited breath to see if more insurance companies will pull out of Florida and how much our rates will go up (and they will go up) or who will be cancelled and left scrambling to find replacement homeowners insurance.

And so, we prepare as best we can as we wait for whatever Milton brings.

Say lots of prayers!

Peace,

Beth
