 On Getting Involved…

One thing that helps give meaning to life is being involved in our communities in some way. There are many benefits to giving our time to volunteer organizations. We connect to something bigger than us that is making a difference in the lives of people. We are helping to change our communities for the better. And no matter how you look at it or what type of volunteer work you choose, it is good for us, good for the community, and good for the people we help. It makes the places we live, great places to live. So, what are some of the benefits?

Well, for starters, we get to meet people who have the same or similar passions that we have. If you find yourself feeling disconnected or feeling lonely and need the company of other people, think about your passions, what you enjoy doing. Then find a volunteer organization and volunteer your help. Maybe it is at a women’s shelter or a food pantry. Maybe it is working for a clothing closet or helping to clean litter off the side of roadways. Maybe it is working for your local humane society or fostering pets that have been turned in. Whatever it is, you will have the opportunity to meet people whose interests are like yours and you will make friends as you help.

Volunteering does a body good! Did you know that not only does volunteering help your overall mental health, but it can help to lower blood pressure and lead to a longer lifespan. It is also something that helps to reduce our stress levels and can help to counteract the effects of anxiety and depression. Feeling sad and out of shape…volunteer!

When we volunteer, we really are given a sense of purpose. We are helping change our communities for the better. Part of the reason for this is due to the act of volunteering. You are doing something for free. You are giving your time to something you feel is important. This in turn has the added benefit of boosting your happiness. I think it helps with our happiness levels because when we volunteer, we tend to forget about our own troubles for a while. We take a break from what is bothering us and sometimes, we realize that what is bothering us isn’t as significant as we may have thought.

Finally, volunteer work is good for your career. Many companies today like to see their employees doing volunteer work in the community. It gives the company a presence outside of work. It also shows that you are a more caring person as you are willing to give of your time to do something that benefits others.

So…what are you waiting for…go volunteer!

Peace,

Beth
