On Beginnings…

There are many times in life we are given the opportunity to have a new beginning. The first of January is a new start to a new year where possibilities seem endless as we look at a blank calendar waiting to be filled in with activities and adventures. Anytime we begin a new relationship or a new job we have a new beginning as we get to know the individual we are choosing to spend time with or the people who we will collaborate with in our new jobs. At this time every year, our school age children have a new beginning. They are going to start school in a new grade where they will have a new teacher, some new and some returning friends to spend their days with as they all learn the new subjects in their new classroom with their new school supplies. It is an exciting time.

There are ways we can help make new beginnings go smoothly. First, is to not be afraid of all the unknowns that come with something new and instead to see anything new as an adventure. It is ok to acknowledge that new can be a little scary. Especially to our youngest students. For pre-K and Kindergarten students, this is the first time they have been in school. Parents, the best thing you can do for your children is to encourage them and help them be brave as they embark on this new journey.

Second, we can be prepared. Whenever we begin something new, learning all we can about what we need or what our student might need to succeed is important. What supplies do we need, what clothes should we wear, what are the rules and expectations. All the information we can gather and learn or teach our children will help us and them succeed in any new adventure. One of the greatest gifts you can give your children that will help ensure their success in school is to teach them manners, how to sit still and not talk when someone else is talking, how to be respectful of other people’s property. In general, teach them how to be nice. We do that for our children by modeling those behaviors in all our interactions.

Finally, bringing an open mind to any new experience is always important. I think I have mentioned in my blog that I don’t like beets. My oldest son, who likes to cook, has made me try them when he makes them.  I try them, discover all over again that I don’t like them (they taste like dirt), and move on. I keep hoping one day I might really like them but…that day has yet to happen. But I keep an open mind. It is also good to not have unrealistic expectations. Anytime I have put expectations on anything I do, I tend to find I am more disappointed in the experience than when I just allow what is going to happen, happen. When I don’t let my expectations rule the day, event, or new experience, I have a wonderful day, event, or new experience.

The schools in our area begin the new school year this coming Monday, August 12th. I pray that all our students have a wonderful school year. I pray parents are able to juggle all the activities a new school year brings and still have time to spend playing with their children. I pray our schools are safe from danger and I pray our children are safe and have their needs met throughout the year.

I also know that even if you don’t have children in the school system, you can help by volunteering at a local school. Sign up to spend an hour reading to the children. Help out the librarian by putting all the books away for them. Help the teachers by funding their supply lists or sending in treats for the staff. These are just a few ideas because there are so many ways we can make our schools happy, safe places to learn. All we need to do is get out there and volunteer.

I think the best thing we can remember is this: New is just an adventure. Don’t be afraid to enjoy the journey.

Peace,

Pastor Beth
