We have become very dependent on our smart phones. They are so much more to us than just a phone to call friends, make appointments, or attend to other business. With the advancement of technology, we have been able to miniaturize computer components to the point where our phones are little computers we can carry around with us all the time. We have the world at our fingertips no matter where we are. Need to make a reservation? Not a problem. Need to look up information on literally anything? Not a problem. Need to send a message? Again…not a problem. We can do pretty much anything with our phones that we can do with our home computers.
But…if you drop one in the water…problem. Many of you may know that on Labor Day, my husband and I went kayaking. I took my phone with me for two reasons. First, I like having my phone with me in case of emergencies. We were going to be out on the water, and you never know what might happen. Especially since we live in Florida, and you know…alligators. Secondly, there is typically a lot of wildlife to be seen and I was hoping to get some pictures. It is not unusual to see manatees, dolphins, alligators of course, along with a lot of water birds while on the kayaks. Just birds this time around by the way. An Osprey, Blue Heron, lots of Egrets, and a couple Anhinga’s. I have no proof because my phone went swimming.
And yes, I know I should have had it in a waterproof container. I will in the future. I just didn’t think I would tip over since I have never tipped over before. I guess I should remember that there is always a first time. Fortunately, I had insurance. I have to say however, it was a little weird to not have a phone. And I truly did not have a phone as we also do not have a land line. There were so many times I reached for my phone to look something up, or to call someone, I lost count. I am not sure how I feel about not having one either. It was kind of nice…and it was a pain.
I think the biggest lesson I learned during my 3.5 days without a phone is this: I use mine too much. Which means that I will be finding ways to not use my phone. In doing so, I am quite sure I will find a few extra minutes…hours in my day to do other activities that will be more fun. I am looking forward to seeing what those might be. Although, I have to be honest with you all, the first day after getting my new phone, I was on it a lot.
Peace,
Pastor Beth
